Erode: A pawnbroker was arrested on Thursday in ‘Operation Kanthuvatti’ (usury) for trying to extort more money from a borrower after repaying the loan amount with interest.
Erode North Police identified the accused as Mr. Thirunavukkarasu, 41, from Periyavalasu. A police officer said Thirunavukkarasu lent Rs2.2 lakh to A Mohammed Sheriff, 39, of Erode town, to expand his meat shop in 2020. “The sheriff told us that he repaid the loan amount with interest in installments. In total, he had paid more than Rs3 lakh to Thirunavukkarasu. When he told Thirunavukkarasu on Thursday that all dues had been paid, the latter demanded another Rs 3 lakh from him, saying he had defaulted on repayment for the past few months.
According to the officer, the moneylender also verbally assaulted the sheriff and threatened him with dire consequences if he did not pay the amount. The sheriff filed a complaint with Erode North Police, who on Thursday registered a complaint against Thirunavukkarasu and arrested him. On Friday, he was brought before a criminal court and imprisoned in the sub-prison of Erode under judicial supervision.
‘Operation Kanthuvatti’ was launched on the instructions of the Director General of Police, Dr C Sylendra Babu, after a police constable, harassed by a loan shark, committed suicide in Cuddalore. tnn
