UP: Troubled by a loan shark, a young man consumes poison at Meerut SSP’s office and dies

Meerut: In a shocking incident, a youth consumed poison at the Meerut Police Superintendent’s (SSP) office after being disturbed by a loan shark. There was a panic at the SSP office after news of the poison consumption by young people spread.

The youngster was immediately transported to medical school and hospital in Meerut where he breathed his last during treatment. The victim was identified as Devendra Singh, a resident of Sarai Qazi under the medical police station.

Devendra had taken out a loan of Rs 1 lakh from a pawnshop about 10 years ago. It is alleged that the pawnbroker demanded Rs 10 lakh including interest from Devendra and also mortgaged his house after failing to pay the amount. Devendra had claimed that he had already paid Rs 2 lakh to the man, according to a report by the Hindi daily Amar Ujala.

Despite the payment of Rs 2 lakh, the pawnshop reportedly refused to return the papers for the house. Upset by the question, Devendra reached the SSP office on Tuesday and consumed poison (sulphas).

Police said they were investigating the case. According to police, Devendra arrived at the SSP office and told staff that he had consumed poison and wanted to speak to senior police officials.

Later, office staff informed SP crime of the incident. SP (Traffic) Jitendra Kumar is said to have heard Devendra’s complaint before he consumed poison.
